No matter how much you might love The Big Lebowski and Fast Times at Ridgemont High, it\u2019s hard to deny that the typical \u201cstoner\u201d stereotype doesn\u2019t help legalization and normalization efforts.<\/p>\n<p>The stoner cleanup initiative, which is loosely organized around the #StonerCleanUpInitiative hashtag, is trying to change that.<\/p>\n<h2>What is #StonerCleanupInitiative?<\/h2>\n<p>#StonerCleanUpInitiative is a movement by cannabis users to clean up the garbage they find at their public smoke spots.<\/p>\n<p>The idea started on Reddit\u2019s r\/trees, a community for cannabis users. In July 2018, <a href=\"https:\/\/old.reddit.com\/r\/trees\/comments\/8za9r4\/cleaned_up_the_smoke_spot_stonercleanupinitiative\/\">user RedArms219 posted a simple picture<\/a> of a paper bag full of trash in a park. They titled it \u201cCleaned up the smoke spot #StonerCleanUpInitiative.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Within about 24 hours, the post had 22,000 upvotes. <a href=\"https:\/\/cannablog.org\/top-10-disposable-weed-pens-your-ultimate-guide-to-a-discreet-experience\/\">Based on anecdotal data<\/a>, that could mean anywhere from 80 to 500,000 total views.<\/p>\n<p>The idea quickly took off and was followed by several similar posts. While there were some facetious posts (such as one \u201cent\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/trees\/comments\/8zkvkp\/cleaned_up_my_local_smoke_spot\/\">who decided to clean up their messy coffee table<\/a>), other posts featured <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/trees\/comments\/8zkz5e\/cleaned_up_my_camp_area_smoke_spot_almost_enough\/\">several plastic bags full of garbage<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/trees\/comments\/8zoopk\/got_to_the_beach_early_in_the_morning_and_was\/\">beach cleanups<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/trees\/comments\/8zn9s6\/girlfriend_and_i_smoke_at_home_so_for_the\/\">even personal efforts to start recycling<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Why Does #StonerCleanupInitiative Matter?<\/h2>\n<p>Since stoners generally have a bad reputation for leaving trash and damage at their smoke spots, the community saw this as the perfect way to combat the stigma.<\/p>\n<p>Picking up not only their own garbage, but also garbage left by other smokers, did more than just send a message, though. It also makes the world better in a very small, but meaningful way. User SkinnyJeansBeans commented, \u201cI sure hopes this catches on let the wholesome age commence [sic].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>People from outside the community have begun to take note, too. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/trees\/comments\/8zn9s6\/girlfriend_and_i_smoke_at_home_so_for_the\/\">A post by ItsFrank11<\/a>, titled \u201cNon smoker here, just wanted to say the #StonerCleanupInitiative is amazing!\u201d celebrated the movement as \u201can overall great thing\u201d and \u201can amazing opportunity to turn the stigma and help push legalization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The stoner cleanup initiative could have just been a great excuse to clean up a little trash, but in our world it means a lot more than that.
